a firefighter puts his own life on the line to save a local grandmother. he's one of the world's youngest leaders. his family is admired from near and far, and this afternoon he's getting a lot of attention as we makes his first trip to washington. but first today at 4:00, we begin with some breaking news. chopper4 is over the scene of a car that crashed into a restaurant here in gaithersburg. take a look. this just happened within the past 20 minutes. you can see the damage at the front door. apparently we haven't gotten any word of injuries at this point, but again this is just unfolded. we're not sure of what the business is except it appears to be perhaps a spanish restaurant or a mexican restaurant there. that has really gone through a very wide sidewalk as we look at chopper4 zooming into the scene there at this what appears to be a strip mall. no other cars in the spaces beside it. we'll keep you updated if we learn of

it's happening along school road near montgomery county airport. so far we know at least one person has been injured. we don't know what caused the crash so we will monitor this and keep you posted. he took off his own air mask and gave it to a woman who was trapped in a burning building. >> mark segraves is live in northwest washington now with more. mark? >> reporter: that's right. good evening. danny lovato is recovering here but remains in intensive care, and right down the hall is the 65 grer-year-old woman that he his team rescued. >> when i get to see him, i'm going to say thank you and hug him because if it wasn't for him, she wouldn't be here. >> reporter: she is grateful to all the d.c. firefighters who helped save her 65-year-old grandmother from her burning a

lovato. the fire broke out wednesday afternoon. four d.c. police officers ran into the building to evacuate res departments, but terrell was dropped in her top floor apartment. >> danny lovato was first one up the ladder, and he held her giving her air, clean air, until we were able to get to her. >> reporter: as seen into these pictures, firefighter danny lovato took his face mask off and gave it to the woman trapped inside the smoke-filled building so she could breathe. during that time they both inhaled large amounts of smoke. both lovato and mrs. terrell are in improving this afternoon at washington hospital center but while they're right down the hall from one another, the two have yet to meet. they hope to have a family reunion either today or tomorrow. coming up at 5:00, you will hear from the other firefighters who were in that building describe just how bad it was and we'll have an update from the

on both firefighter lovato and the woman he saved. >> thank you, mark. repairs are completed and a road near the iwo jima memorial is open again. a sinkhole prompted the closing of marshall drive. a few minutes ago officials told us the repairs are done. developing right now, a search for a serial bank robber who montgomery county police tell us hit three banks in just 15 minutes. those banks are in just a four-mile stretch on connecticut avenue and university boulevard. news4's pat collins has the latest now from wheaton. >> reporter: 11:20 a.m. the suntrust bank in chevy chase. 11:29 a.m., the capital one bank in kensington. 11:35 bank the bb&t bank in wheaton. three montgomery county

hit in 15 minutes. it appears to be the work of the same guy in some sort of speed robbery spree. >> it appears we have three bank robberies in about 15 minutes by the same guy. is that some sort of record here in montgomery county? have you ever seen anything like this before? >> not in recent memory, no. >> reporter: what do you make of this? >> i'm not sure what to make of it right now. >> reporter: the suspect is said to be distinguished by what he's not wearing. he's said to be unmasked, ungloved. they say sometimes he wears sunglasses, sometimes he wears a sport coat. they say if you know him, you'll know him. now, there's a fourth bank robbery linked to him. early this morning out in prince george's county. i'll have more on that coming up at 5:00. now back to you.

>> reporter: this is chris gordon in annapolis where it was revealed today that maryland governor larry hogan sent this letter giving his full support to noah's law. it's named for montgomery county police officer noah leotta, and it requires all convicted drunk drivers to use ignition interlocking devices on their vehicles, but noah leotta's father says one committee has already watered down its requirements. >> this law with the interlock system in its original form will make a difference and actually save lives. >> reporter: ahead at 5:00, efforts to restore all of the requirements that were in the original proposal for noah's law. back to you. public mourning continues at this hour for former first lady nancy reagan. people are paying respects at the reagan presidential library in simi valley, california. her funeral is set for tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. and we'll be carrying it live here on

tom brokaw will be among those reflecting on her life. mrs. reagan will be buried at the library next to the late president. meanwhile, a former white house butler from frederick is talking about his years working for the reagans. what she was really like and her influence on a major international event coming up in a few minutes on news4. canadian prime minister justin trudeau is in town tonight holding talks with president obama at the white house. it's the prime minister's first official visit to washington. the two leaders are discussing a wide range of topics from isis to trade to climate change. during the news conference in the rose garden today, they touted the strong bond between the two nations and promised to enhance those tight ties, especially when it comes to clean energy. >> the president and i agree on many things, including of paramount importance the direction we want to take our countries in to ensure a clean and

i'm meagan fitzgerald in arlington where police are looking for the suspect in the city's second road rage case in less than a week. the latest incident happened here on west lee road just past four mile run drive on wednesday afternoon. police say the victim honked at the suspect after he cut him off. witnesses say the suspect got out, approached the victim, returned to his car, and that's when he grabbed a bat. >> as he was striking the vehicle, the victim did put his hands up and he was struck in the hand as the window shattered. >> reporter: police say they're looking for a suspect who was driving a gray or light-colored 2000 toyota avalon. coming up at 5:30, hear from the victim who described the scary moments leading up to that attack.

developing right now, new findings involving the zika virus in puerto rico. the centers for disease control predicts that one in five people in that country could become infected by the end of the year, and thousands of them will be pregnant women. the mosquito-borne virus is linked to birth defects. the cdc says urgent action is needed, including money from congress to help fight the spread of the disease here in the u.s. well, apple is about to launch its next big thing. of course, the tech giant has not provided any details, but some analysts and tech blogs believe it will feature a batch of items including a new four-inch iphone, a smaller ipad pro, and new bands for the apple watch. apple sent an invitation to media outlets today stating, quote, let us loop you in. the launch event will be on monday, march 21st. stay tuned. we broke the story on the nbc washington app today. the new concerns about metro's safety after a train full of

breaking news at the live desk. washington, d.c., metropolitan police announced an arrest in a rash of robberies in d.c. and prince george's county. police say terrell strickland took part in at least 14 robberies in the district and 7 p

early january and last week. investigators say there was a pattern in all the robberies. >> in this case these individuals targeted lone women. they would use violence against women who resisted these robberies, and in one case attacked and injured an 81-year-old woman in the course of these robberies. so i can't tell you how satisfying it is for us to stand here today. >> and police say they're still working these cases and expect to make more arrests. pat? >> all right, scott. thank you. first on news4, troubling news from metro again. another train carrying passengers ran past a red signal and now the train parader couopd be fired. >> adam tuss broke this news today and joins us from silver spring station where this happened last week, but, adam, what is metro telling you about today? >> reporter: so, jim, today what they're telling us is they've made an immediate fix after this happened. what happened was this train went into what's known as

the silver spring station. that's basically like a metal track between the two main tracks. when it went into that middle track, the automatic train control system for metro, which this train was in, sent it past the red signal by about three feet. now, metro says there was never any danger to any passengers and there was never any danger of hitting another train or getting on the wrong track, but still for an agency that's trying to return its entire fleet of trains to this automatic operation, it's not settling that that happened with the train right here at silver spring last week. >> so, adam, has metro come up with any solution, any way to stop this from happening again? >> reporter: yeah, pat. so the solution they figured out was that they went in and they actually changed the technology that controls trains here on the tracks. they were so disturbs by what happened with that one train that they came in, took a look at things, and the very next day they made a fix to their technology so that the

system will not allow a train to enter into the position that it did last week. the train operator themselves will have to take over control of the train and manually put that train into a position so they can stop the train themselves. in this case they want the human to actually take over for the technology that is out there. >> interesting. adam tuss for us live in silver spring out in front on this story. adam, thanks so much. in other news, baltimore police will soon become the largest police department in the country with a body camera program. the department will begin getting body cameras in may, and all officers will have them within two years. the police commissioner thinks the cameras will help the department focus on community policing. the program is expected to cost more than $11 million over five years. the city was pressured to get body cameras after freddie gray's death. the goal is to keep buses moving and on schedule.

will begin testing a new system that will give buses priority when traffic signals turn green. that's according to a report in "the washington post." right now 144 buses are equipped with the technology. the pilot test will take place on some of the city's busiest corridors like 16th street. there is a potential health risk involving pistachio nuts sold at giant. packages of wonderful pistachios are being recalled because they may be contaminated with salmonella. the recall affects both in-shell, and shelled versions. if you bought any of these nuts, giant says throw them away and take your receipt to the store to get a full refund. check our nbc washington app for details on which lots of these nuts are affected. right now in louisiana large fish are swimming in the streets. it's after severe storms pounded the area causing deadly flooding and forcing the governor of the state to declare

emergency. this rain isn't expected to let up until at least saturday. nbc's janet shanlyian has our story from louisiana. >> reporter: there is no relief for the people of louisiana. the rain is coming down as it has been for the past 48 hours. an additional 3 to 5 inches in the forecast for today, and that is not going to help folks who are trying to get back in their homes in this flooded out neighborhood known as tall timbers. some 100 homes in this community are under water. some have as much as five feet of water in their residences. >> everything you see is gone. i have a brand new roof on a house that's absolutely worthless. me and my three kids lost everything today. >> reporter: last night they called for an additional 3,500 families to a mandatory evacuation. there's concern another levee will be breached by rising floodwaters here, and they do not want to

this afternoon. that had been long standing since 2006. but again warm one today. as far as the next couple days, look at this, we will still remain above average even though the temperatures will start coming down each afternoon and our rain chances will start going up. especially this weekend and for the early part of next week. get ready for a little bit of wet weather. we'll talk about the weekend plans, too, and again what's going on across our area. pick up the clouds today so we had filtered sunshine. mostly high clouds. there's your rain off to the west. we will get a little bit early part of the day tomorrow. there's the weather front. it goes all the way down to the south where they have had a lot of rain and a lot of flooding, historic areas of louisiana, texas, and also moving right up into areas of tennessee. as far as that front, it makes its way eastward. it's going to meander around our area for a couple days with the best chance of rain early next week. for your evening, we remain dry under those clouds. low 70s by 7:00. upper 60s by 8:00.

more breaking news at the live desk this afternoon. a man working as part of a tree removal crew has died after being hit by a tree in prince george's county. chopper4 has arrived over the scene and firefighters say that crew was clearing trees at a construction site on yorkville road in temple hills. it's near the beltway near route 5. here is a still image of thscen we can show you. one of the trees we're told hit a member of the crew in the head, and that crew member later died. chopper4 has arrived at the scene and we'll try to give you live images from overhead as soon as possible. pat and jim. >> thanks, scott. tonight the republicans take the stage in miami. their 12th debate in a campaign that has been a wild one. and at times below

she died on this date in 1913. van hollen a sponsoring a measure to put a permanent statue at the capitol. tubman was a slave in maryland and then became the leader of the underground railroad. van hollen is running for senate. the district handed out 2.5 million traffic and parking tickets last year. for whatever reason, a bunch of drivers have yet to pay up. aaa mid-atlantic say drivers owe the city nearly $85 million in unpaid tickets. that's about 1 out of 4 tickets issued, and a 24% increase in unpaid fines over the past year. non-d.c. residents owe the biggest share. 7 out of 10 of those citations have not been paid. right now a homeless encampment behind unistation is no longer there. d.c. cleared it out earlier today. about two dozen people have been

when the plane finally landed yesterday, things got physical. >> a lot of people were, you know, stop, you know, but nobody actually did anything at the point i saw the ladies, they were swinging on each other, punching each other. the stewardess even got punched, and me and my friend jazz stepped in and broke the fight. >> amazingly no one was arrested for charged. it seems the whole thing started owe every loud music. in a statement spirit airlines confirms that two passengers who appeared to be intoxicated were playing loud music on a boom box. when asked to turn it down they responded by holding the boom box in the air and waving it around. that's when the fighting started. >> that's the spirit. first at four, he has the local voice that's making those chairs spin. ♪ >> what a voie.
